Hands On Research

While writing UNTIL SHE COMES HOME, I tried my hand at making pierogi as it was a staple for my characters in 1950s Detroit. 


Had I simply read about the process in a cookbook, I wouldn't have known how sticky the dough can be if not mixed just right. 


I wouldn't have poured the potato-water down the drain and had to boil another half-dozen potatoes. 


I wouldn't have experienced the pitfalls of rolling the dough too thin and too thick, and I wouldn't have discovered what happens when one does not properly and thoroughly crimp the dumplings.

Had the process gone smoothly and without all of these missteps, I wouldn't have had much to write about. 


Thankfully, I gave myself much material.
